Peace of mind, safety and limited liability through compliance with safety codes
Provincial laws regulate safety through compliance with adopted safety codes including: CSA 22.1 Canadian Electrical Code and CSA B149.1 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code Compliance is not optional. Non-compliance is an offense punishable by monetary and jail terms.
No person may manufacturer, install, sell or offer for sale any equipment related to gas systems for use in Alberta unless it has been: (a) tested and certified by a certification organization accredited by the Standards Council of Canada, or (b) inspected and accepted by a certification organization accredited by the Standards Council of Canada, and the equipment bears evidence of having been accepted in the manner authorized by the certification organization.
Alberta Province Wide Variance is intended to provide a temporary solution to 3-rd party Field Approvals in compliance with the CSA B149.1 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code. Variance is not intended to justify non-compliance. A documented valid technical reason is needed to vary from the Code. Price, delivery, private (plant) standards, past performance or preference can not be considered as valid technical reasons.
Compliance with CSA B149.3 Code for the Field Approval of Fuel-Related Components on Appliances and Equipment is only a part of provincial safety regulations and by itself does not make the installation legal.
